US departments consider cloud storage

One of the most prominent government departments in the US is considering its options in regard to managing data with online cloud storage.

The Social Services Administration (SSA) has reportedly begun investigating the possibilities brought about through the adoption of an offsite solution that is accessible through a dedicated web portal.

Responsible for a range of sensitive client details, the SSA would need to be able to upload and store documents on a massive scale and with top-notch security measures.

Tiered archiving protocols and advanced search capabilities would also be required - as all the information provided to the association needs to be highly accessible to both internal employees and external stakeholders.

Currently, the department makes use of two in-house facilities - both located on the west coast - but seems to be finding that a its need for storage is quickly outstripping their ability to find space on their systems.

While the official request for information issued by the SSA does not go into the specific requirements that the organisation is likely to require, it does signal a growing level of acceptance amongst high-level departments of the value and efficiency that cloud storage can deliver.
